For dogs with urinary stones and crystals, you want to make sure that your dog's body is more acidic. The best way is to feed a raw diet. Beef and rabbit are good meats which are acidically higher. But you do not want the diet to be too acidic because then while preventing struvite stones, you could contribute to oxalate stones. More acidic is good, humans on the other hand benefit from having an alkaline blood chemistry (opposite of dogs). If you do a search on acidic and alkaline foods, you could try to figure something out, it would be good to get help from a professional to develop a nutritionally balanced slightly acidic diet. You could do some deep research on the RAW diet, much of the time, RAW feeding has helped many pet owners avoid urinary stones all together.

Please please avoid the stuff vets sell. It's horrible. It trades one problem for a whole slew of health problems. Vets get very very little nutrition education and it is funded or backed by Hills/Science Diet... which you know what they're interested in... $$$$$$$$
Plus vets make about 40% profit off the crappy "food" they sell. Again... $$$$$$$$$
References :
Our dog was put on CD vet food by our vet & he did fine on it. Our vet wasn't sure if his urinary tract infection was caused by the crystals or if the crystals caused the infection.
References :
Previous experience.

The key is to stock up only healthy food. as long as you don't have easy access to junk food, it will help you stick to whatever diet you choose. Let someone else buy your groceries so that you will not be tempted
References :
If you are really looking the best way to diet,
I suggest doing what this mom did and combining the Acai diet with a cleansing program for the best result

youre going about it wrong. DIETS are doomed for failure. you have to change your lifestyle. period.
that means eating well (low carbs, low fat, high protein) FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE...not for just a couple of weeks.
and you HAVE TO excercise...even walking will suffice. being sedentary just doesnt work.
get out and move

cheers
References :
Cut out sugar and white flour. After not having those things for awhile you actually start liking healthy things like fruit more than junk.
References :
Calculate your bmr(how many calories you burn per day with no activity): http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calcul…

Then reduce this intake by 500 calories. You'd burn 1 pound a week. Keep a food journal and write down everything you eat and how many calories/fats there are. Don't go over 30g of fat per day while on a diet. Eat every 2-3 hours to keep you metabolism up.

Plus, exercise. Drinks lots of water.

Depending on your excerise you can lose up to 8 - 10 pound per month.
References :
Comment on How does Innova EVO compare to science diet for cats? by Elaine M

Science Diet was supposed to be 'good' till I looked at what the label actually said. It's not a good food at all, and I took my cats off it. Their dry coats immediately improved!

Check the labels--a good cat food has at least 35% protein. The first 5 ingredients should have 4 meat sources and one grain, and none of them should be by-products OR corn.

I'd say stick with EVO. The 50% protein ones may be a little rich at first, and cause diarhea, but it's the better food.

You can also look into Wellness Core, Royal Canin kitten food, Royal Canin Siamese 38, and Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul--all good foods. If you have a pet supplies store near you they can order it for you so you don't have to travel so much. Or buy triple the food when you do go, to reduce your trips.
